Big Boy

In October 2019, the Union Pacific Railroad’s Big Boy steam locomotive number 4014 toured the American Southwest. This gallery features film and digital photographs covering 300 miles of its journey through the desert from Chamiso, Arizona, to El Paso, Texas. Using multiple digital and analog cameras loaded with different types of film, I created visual effects similar to the ones that inspired the vintage photo filters popular on social media apps today. However, the effects in my photographs were made in camera without digital manipulation. This gallery is best viewed on screens larger than a smart phone.
